Unions representing school and college staff this week opposed the full reopening of schools on 8 March, urging the UK Government to implement a ”phased return” of English schools to avoid a risk of a surge in coronavirus cases.
A full reopening of schools would bring nearly 10 million pupils and staff into circulation in England, close to one-fifth of the population.
A coalition of nine organisations has urged the Prime Minister to only plan for a phased return, and not for a full return of all pupils on Monday 8 March in England.
The group of unions said they were:
“Committed to bringing all children and young people back into the classroom as soon as possible. However, it is counterproductive if there is a danger of causing another surge in the virus, and the potential for a further period of lockdown.”
On Monday, the Prime Minister said no decisions had been taken on whether year groups across schools in England will return together or whether primaries and secondaries could be staggered.
