DO YOU SUPPORT OR OPPOSE REFORM OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS?

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, this week announced 36 new peerages, including a peerage for his younger brother, Jo Johnson and a Knighthood for, Philip May, the husband of former Prime Minister, Theresa May.

The announcement has been criticised by the Electoral Reform Society, with the new peers being able to claim £305 each day they attend the Lords, costing an estimated additional £1.1m a year.

Darren Hughes, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, said: “Today marks a nail in the coffin for the idea that the Lords is some kind of independent chamber of experts. We need to see it scrapped and replaced with a fair-elected chamber that’s fit for a democracy.”

In total, the UK Government confirmed there would be 19 new Conservative peers, five from the Labour Party and 12 sitting for other parties or as independents.

The appointments by the Labour Party included the nomination of former MP and Political Secretary to Jeremy Corbyn, Katy Clark and former General Secretary of Unite, Tony Woodley.

The House of Lords is said to be the second-largest chamber in the world after China’s National People’s Congress.
